A Message from Danette
Dear Friends & Partners,
The Israelites really could have made it into the promise land in only 11 days. It didn’t need to take them 40 years! So often, we take a lot longer to possess the promises of God in our lives than God’s original plan. Our grumbling, our complaining, and our fighting with our flesh often prolongs our progress in getting from point “A” to point “B.” A few years ago, I left visit to Israel more determined than ever to make the trip to my promise land on the most direct route possible. I have a lot of unfulfilled promises from the Lord and I’m going for it! How about you? Maybe you have been wandering around in the desert and you’re finally ready to move forward. It was God’s love and patience with the Israelites that caused Him to lead them around the longer route. God knew that they were not ready to fight the giants in the promise land – they couldn’t even win the battle against their own flesh. In the desert, they were only fighting with their flesh, not the enemy. Sometimes the same is true for us!
Deut. 8:2 says, “Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.” God took them the route they needed to go – the route of humility and testing. If you don’t pass the humility test, you aren’t really qualified to go on to the other levels of testing. Pride is an enemy of a servant’s heart. The greater our heart is to serve, the greater the anointing can increase in our lives. Also, the greater our heart is to serve, the greater amount of land we can be trusted with. We must first pass the humility test, as we seek to go higher in God and possess all the land (or promises) He has for us. Deut. 8:3 says, “He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.” If we aren’t humble, God can’t teach us anything because we think we know it all. That’s why we have to pass the humility test before we can get started on the other qualifying exams! Manna symbolizes dependence on God. Our total dependence on Him is what God is really after. More often than not, God uses financial dependence on Him to develop this in us. Pride says, “I don’t need God. I can take care of myself.” Humility says, “I’m totally dependent on the Lord for my every need.” God tested them to know what was in their hearts. After we allow God to do His work of humility in our lives, we then have the privilege of taking numerous other exams like the obedience test, the faithfulness test, the money test, the attitude test, and of course the mouth test! I thought I had a lot of exams in graduate school, but God’s exam schedule lasts a life time because He wants us to continually graduate to a higher level in Him!
What’s great about God is the fact that His tests are always open book! We need God’s Word daily in our lives so we can be led by Him in our every choice and decision. Deut. 8:16 tells us that God humbles us and tests us so that in the end it might go well for us. God is concerned about the end product. Many people start out on the straight and narrow, but fall away. Our gifts can take us to a place that our character can’t keep us, if we don’t pass the character tests along the way. The testing process is for our own good! Then the Lord tells them to remember Him when they get into the promise land. Deut. 8:18 says, “But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth…” If we don’t remember that it was God who gave us all of the blessings of the promise land, things won’t go well with us in the end. I believe that’s right where America is now – we have forgotten about God. It was God who blessed our nation and because many have forgotten that, we are experiencing some difficulties. America has forgotten how we got to the promise land – the land of blessing! It was God who gave us the ability to produce wealth and we need to come back to God is a big way!
